چکیده

Hypoallergenic novel foods may have benefits for food-allergic consumers. However, other novel foods may exacerbate the problems associated with food allergy. This paper reviews the existing legislation associated with the introduction of novel foods and specifically considers its coverage of allergy risks and benefits. Various regulations are in place to protect consumer health. These regulations require novel food safety to be assessed before they can enter the market, but do not specify how this assessment, which includes allergenicity, should be performed. It is concluded that including a benefit assessment in the novel food legislation, may be beneficial. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Allergenic potential of novel foods.

Concerns have been expressed that the introduction of novel foods into the diet might lead to the development of new food allergies in consumers. Novel foods can be conveniently divided into GM and non-GM categories. Decision-tree approaches (e.g. International Life Sciences Institute-International Food Biotechnology Council and WHO/FAO) to assess the allergenic potential of GM foods were devel...

Allergy assessment of foods or ingredients derived from biotechnology, gene-modified organisms, or novel foods.

The introduction of novel proteins into foods carries a risk of eliciting allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to the introduced protein and a risk of sensitizing susceptible individuals. No single predictive test exists to perform a hazard assessment in relation to allergenic properties of newly expressed proteins in gene-modified organisms (GMOs). Instead, performance of a weighted ris...

Current (Food) Allergenic Risk Assessment: Is It Fit for Novel Foods? Status Quo and Identification of Gaps

Food allergies are recognized as a global health concern. In order to protect allergic consumers from severe symptoms, allergenic risk assessment for well-known foods and foods containing genetically modified ingredients is installed. However, population is steadily growing and there is a rising need to provide adequate protein-based foods, including novel sources, not yet used for human consum...

Risks of allergic reactions to biotech proteins in foods: perception and reality.

In recent years, significant attention has been paid to the use of biotechnology to improve the quality and quantity of the food supply due in part to the projected growth in the world population, plus limited options available for increasing the amount of land under cultivation. Alterations in the food supply induced by classical breeding and selection methods typically involve the movement of...

Food toxicity and safety

Key Points • Despite the many potential health risks associated with foods, in practice the degree of risk associated with the modern food supply is extremely low. • By far the most important hazards of significance are those from biological agents: pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and a few toxic seafoods. • Trends to larger-scale production, longer distribution chains in the food supply, i...
